Guidelines for Conference Workshop Leaders
The conference workshop is designed to provide a forum for in depth discussion of a topic that is of interest to the leader, and that is or could potentially be of interest to the SOF network as a whole. Where possible it is suggested the topic chosen should relate to the conference theme, or be treated in such a way as to relate it to the theme, although this is not essential. A wide choice of different topics and styles is sought in order to appeal to the wide range of viewpoints held within our network.
The time allocated for each workshop is approximately 90 minutes.
Two particular styles of workshop predominate:
- A workshop in which the group do most of the work, after the leader has made a brief presentation of the topic and outlined exercises to facilitate discussion.
- A workshop in which the leader makes a full presentation of the topic, but encourages active feedback and discussion by the participants.
The most successful workshop has a number of important characteristics, which include the following:
- It has been put together with a great deal of care and thought
- The presenter has an in depth knowledge and passion for the subject chosen
- The participants also care about the topic and are anxious to discuss it
- The number of participants is well balanced, neither too many or too few
- The leader both opens and closes the workshop in a clear and engaging manner.
- The leader has facilitation skills and ensures all present are given opportunity to participate
- Participants receive some written material summarising and expanding on the topic in order that their interest in the subject may continue after the conference.
